The Mekong river originated in Tibetan Plateau, China. It is the twelfth longest river in the world, and the third in Asia. It has about 5,000 km long and runs through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It is considered the second most biodiversity in the world after the Amazon river.
The Mekong river has different names in different countries. For example, the river is named Lancang river in China, and Mekong Delta (Nine Dragon River) in Vietnam. Some parts of the river are also the borders between countries. For example, the river has also two tripoint borders. The first tripoint border is between China, Myanmar, and Laos. The second tripoint border is between Myanmar, Lao, and Thailand (the Golden Triangle area which was the hub of heroin producers).
Great Lake in Cambodia is also a tributary of the Mekong river. There is an estimation that 40% of the Cambodian population depends on the Mekong river for natural resources and food intake. According to some organizations, there are about 300 million people depending on the Mekong river for economic or natural resources.
Overfishing has depleted marine livestock and the biodiversity of the Mekong river. In addition, many upstream hydropower dams also caused drought and saltwater intrusion in Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
