Kien Giang Province, Vietnam

Kien Giang is a southern province of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. It has over 1,6 million inhabitants, and its capital is Rach Gia but Ha Tien city and Phu Quoc island are well known to tourists. Kien Giang borders Ca Mau province to the south, Bac Lieu and Hau Giang to the east, Can Tho and An Giang to the north, Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand sea to the west. Phu Quoc island can offer visitors its natural beauty but Ha Tien city is attracted by its historical story.

People who love to enjoy the natural beautiful views should visit Phu Quoc island. The ones who love its historical story should not skip Ha Tien city. The name “Ha Tien” is derived from the Sino-Vietnamese word, meaning river spirit. The city was established by Chinese immigrants who opposed Qing Dynasty. Mac Cuu is considered discovering this land and made this land prosperous and more attractive to other ethnicities such as Khmer and Chinese, Vietnamese. This land was unstable because of the fighting between Khmer and Siem (Thailand today). Mac Cuu gave this land to Nguyen Dynasty for protection, Nguyen Dynasty recognized Mac Cuu’s contribution by granting him as governor of this land. You may be surprised when you know that Ha Tien has a sizeable population is Chinese descendants. Mac Cuu’s statue, family temple, and tomb are well preserved today to welcome visitors.
