The Christmas holiday is celebrated around the World. People often assume that Christmas Day originated from a religious holiday, but it is a combination of religious and traditional holidays.
Go back to few thousands years ago, before Jesus was born. Ancient Europians believed in ancient Gods such as wind, tree, mountain, etc. During the Roman Era, people celebrated the Mithra God on 25th December. Mithra God was believed to keep the darkest forces at bay and protect people.
Later on, when Catholic spread all over Europe because in the Bible there is no evidence that indicate the day of Jesus born, so people adopted the 25th of December was the birth day of Jesus. Over the time under influence of religious leaders, people celebrated the 25th December as religious holiday called Christmas.
England banned Christmas Day in the short time of 1600s. You can’t believe that from 1659 to 1681 Christmas Day was outlawed in Boston, America, but some parts of America people celebrated Christmad Day without problems.
Nowsdays, people celebrate Christmad Day around the world, no matter what religions they follow. For example, Japan celebrates Christmas Day, even though Japan has small size of Christians. You are surprised to know that Turkish people celebrate Christmas Day even though over 95 % of its population are muslim. Thanks for Turkish founding Father who embraced secularism.
In America, every home often displays Christmas trees with decorations inside or outside home. Older people often put Christmas gifts for their younger generations under Christmas trees. On the Eve Christmas Day, people often collect their gifts and have meals with their families.
Santa Claus is believed from a legend of monk named Nicholas. He was born around A.D 280 in modern day of Turkey. He was known by his kindness by giving all of his inherited wealth to the poor and unfortunate people. A kindness story made him famous that he saved three poor daughters from being sold to protitution or slavery by their father. He gave dowries so that three poor sisters could be married off.
