The Ancient Hoi An Town

The Ancient Hoi An Town is not far from Da Nang, it is about 30 Km from Da Nang city center. It was recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in 1999. Hoi An means peaceful meeting place, during internal fighting between Trinh lord of the North and Nguyen lord of the South. In 1570 Nguyen Lord was interested in trading with foreigners. As a result, Hoi An flourished as the most trading port for Vietnam during that time.

According to historians and archeologists: Euro, China, Japan, and some Asian countries traded at Hoi An. Shipwreck discoveries showed that Vietnamese and Asian ceramics were transported from Hoi An as far as Sinai, Egypt. Many homes and buildings were built with a combination of local and foreign influences.

When Emperor Gia Long ruled over Vietnam, Gia Long granted French exclusive trade rights nearby the port town of Da Nang. Because of French influence, Da Nang became a new trade center while Hoi An lost its trade status. People had forgotten the ancient Hoi An town over the next 200 years until Polish archaeologists restored it back.

Hoi An has attracted a lot of domestic and international visitors every year. Tourism has become the most important economic sector of Hoi An residents. You may see street sellers can speak several languages such as Chinese, Korean, English, etc.
