Ukraine war goes to the dangerous stage after Russia annexed four more regions of Ukraine. Ukraine retaliated by expedition to their NATO application. There are many explanations about Ukraine war. Please read my explanation about the war in Ukraine, so you can have a big picture about the war.
Events that led to Ukraine war:
Shortly after the Fall of Soviet Union, Ukraine declared independent in December 1991. It became a sovereign state, but it has a sizeable population of ethnic Russians. The majority of ethnic Russians live near border with Russia. More over, Russian language is primary language in those areas.
The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurance was signed on December 1994. In this agreement, Ukraine hands over all nuclear weapons to Russia in exchange the US, UK, Russia guaranty for its security. Prior to this, Ukraine had many nuclear weapon after Russia and the US. Unfortunately, Russia who promised Ukraine security is the one invade its country.
Orange revolution on December 2004 overthrew Russia backed Ukrainian government and replaced by president Yushchenko who had the policy toward the West, and wanted to join EU.
Ukraine wanted to join NATO in 2008. Russia warned the West that Ukraine is not a real nation state.
Euromaidan protests from November 2013 to February 2014 toppled the old government and replaced the new government which committed to join EU and want to become a NATO member. Aftermath, Russia annexed Crimea peninsula. Russia defended that Crimea was transferred from Russia to Ukraine in 1954 under Soviet time was illegal and unfair.
December 2021, Putin claimed that Russian and Ukrainian are one people. In addition, Russia amassed troops and military equipment near Ukrainian border. Russia demanded that Ukraine will be never admitted to NATO. The West rejected.
February 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine in many fronts. After a few months, Russia failed to capture the Ukrainian capital Kiev. It turned to invade Ukrainian territories near its border with the purpose to annex those areas.
Why Ukraine made big mistakes
The figure 1 and 2 above show us that the territories that Russia annexed, have majority of ethnic Russians and spoken Russian language. Because of that, Russia can exploit those areas. Ukraine handed over all of its nuclear weapons to Russia was the biggest mistake. Why? International laws are often violated by powerful nations like Russia, China, the US, etc. No country wants to mess around or invade countries armed with nuclear weapons.
Why the US and NATO miscalculated?
Figure 3 shows us that Ukraine is not the US’s strategic security. The North and the South of the US are surrounded by friendly countries: Canada and Mexico. The East and the West of the US are protected by the Pacific ocean and Atlantic ocean. Ukraine is a troubled country with high corruption and demographic unstable( ethnicity and language). In the book with the title ” Supper Power Illusion”, the author emphasized that the expansion of NATO is not a good idea. In case of conflict, national interests can weaken the NATO organization. For example, you can see right now, some NATO members don’t really want to support Ukraine. Why? They don’t see any benefits to supporting Ukraine. When you analyze the big companies nowadays, you can see many big companies outsource many departments that are not effective or profitable. NATO is like big companies, and NATO members are like departments. Good members should be admitted, unprofitable members should be outsourced.
Russia’s mistake
Before this war, Russia called this war a special operation. Now, Russia annexed four more regions of Ukraine. It shows the world that Russia is an invader. In addition, financial and human resources to govern “the colony” can bankrupt Russian country. The UK let many colonies independent without any fights is an example.
Conclusion
Russia, Ukraine, and NATO should find a compromise to end this war. History teaches us that nationalism buried many empires. Why you guys should support my blog.
