Why remittance does not always help immigrants’ relatives

Many immigrants or abroad workers regularly send money to relatives in their native countries. This may not help immigrants’ relatives and immigrants in the long term. Sending money to help relatives in needs is a good thing to do, but it may have adverse result when money does not reach right people.

Remittance is source of income for many developing countries . The majority of people in developing countries do not reply remittance as the source of income in regular basic of daily life. Why many of people in developing countries they reply remittance, especially people who have relatives living or working oversea. Based on many independent studies, people who reply on remittance as source of income, those people may not grow for careers, personal skills or personal responsibilities compared to others who don’t reply on remittance. In the US, many immigrant minority of communities, these immigrants often send money to relatives every month as long as immigrants are still working. Curiosity is human habit in nature, I learned that many of these immigrants often sent money to uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and neighbors, etc. Money is hard to earn even in the US. I asked them: “why do you have to send money for your healthy relatives monthly when they can make the living for themselves?”, I often got answers such as they asked me for money, if I didn’t send money, they would disconnected or boycotted me or if I didn’t send, I was afraid that they wouldn’t survive or having hard life. In developing countries, the majority of citizens do not have oversea relatives to get money monthly, those citizens are fine, many of them can prosper because they can stand up by their own feet. The remittance story in every developing country is similar to many south American countries, south and south east Asia countries, etc. People who live in the developed countries, they often don’t know remittance word because they never receive or send money to anyone else. Many stories from immigrant community such as people receive money from oversea, they often don’t work, many of them get into gamble, drug and many vices, etc. Many people who often got money from oversea, after they migrated to live with their relatives, they often regret and awake what they had squandered their money. Many people who came to the US when they were young 16 and up. They worked so hard to send money to oversea so they didn’t have time to study English or learn jobs that they dreamed to. They live their lives for others, I don’t know it is worth or not, it is right or wrong.

The positive side of remittance is help the developing countries grow or helping immigrants’ relatives such as disable parents, or spouses, or young children or little brothers or sisters. In the negative side of remittance, many immigrants’ relatives may take advantage or rely on remittance. In the end, immigrants work more and immigrants’ relatives work less. The ones who enjoy lives may not the ones who contribute the most for their hardworking.
